Eric Johnson is from a suburb of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where he was born Eric Johann Johnson on August 7, 1979, the younger of two sons. He enrolled in theatre school at the tender age of 9, where he found the work daunting but rewarding. Eric has had an active career in Canada that spans over a decade. Eric's most high-profile role to American audiences (before Smallville) was playing "teen Tristan," the younger counterpart to Brad Pitt in the film Legends of the Fall. After that, however, he went through a growth spurt that left him at 6'1" at 15 years of age (he'd grow another inch over the next few years) so he had a difficult time landing roles between 1995 and 1997. He didn't let this discourage him, though, and he kept auditioning, landing a few TV commercials and little else during those lean years. However, once he turned 18, he began landing role after role in Canadian and American productions, both on the small and silver screen, and he hasn't slowed down since. In 1998 Eric displayed an integrity and determination rarely seen in young actors today by turning down a three-year contract in New York City for a role on a major network soap opera. He's said he knew better things would come his way - and he was right. In 2000, Eric played the lead in an award-winning and highly controversial film titled Scorn, for which he was nominated for a Best Male Lead Actor Gemini (the Canadian Emmy). Soon after that, acclaimed TV director David Nutter remembered Eric from his Roswell auditions (where he ultimately did not get a role) and, together with the producers of the show, cast Eric as Whitney Fordman on the WB network's new series Smallville, which debuted in the fall of 2001. Eric then relocated to Vancouver for the part, where the show is filmed. Unfortunately, despite the widespread critical acclaim that Eric was garnering for his performances on the show, in early 2002 the producers of Smallville decided to write Eric's role out of Smallville for story-telling reasons. Eric immediately went on to direct his first film, the 12-minute movie Candy From Strangers. He then returned to Smallville in the fall of 2002 for Whitney's swan song in the Season 2 episode "Visage," where his character was permanently killed off in the present timeline, and once more in Season 4, in the episode "Facade," which showed Whitney in a flashback. Eric has gone on to star in several major independent films, including the controversial Bang Bang You're Dead and the critically acclaimed Stealing Sinatra, both for Showtime Pictures, the Jackie Collins TV movie Hollywood Wives: The New Generation. He was also the antagonist inGinger Snaps Unleashed, the sequel to the Canadian cult classic Ginger Snaps. Most recently, Eric was seen playing the second lead in the film trilogy based on Gerald Lund's series of books about early Mormon culture, The Work and the Glory co-starring other WB alumni such as Tiffany DuPont and Brenda Strong. Eric also produced his first screenplay, entitled Fishbowl, which wrapped up filming in November 2004 and was co-produced by his wife. The film made a valiant showing at film festivals around the country in 2005-2006. Eric appeared in two separate pilots in the 2004-2005 television season. One is the Canadian prime time drama Falcon Beach, from the makers of Degrassi: The New Generation. He also had a small part in the SciFi backdoor pilot Anonymous Rex. The former was picked up as a successful series on GlobalTV and is currently airing its entire first season in the US on the ABC Family Channel; the latter wasn't picked up as a series. Unfortunately, Eric and Adria had moved to Los Angeles by the time Falcon Beach went to series, and he was unable to reprise his role, which was eventually recast with actor Morgan Kelly. Recently Eric was seen in a guest role on the CBS drama Criminal Minds. In the near future, Eric will be seen alongside William Shatner and Jason Priestley in the film Everest! and the tele-movie Honeymooon with Mom alongside Shelley Long and his Hollywood Wives co-star Jack Scalia. On August 7, 2004, Eric's 25th birthday, he married his longtime ladylove, Canadian writer/ producer Adria Budd, whom he met while she worked as Annette O'Toole's personal assistant on Smallville. The two have recently produced their first collaboration, a short film called Fishbowl. The couple has recently moved from their native Canada to Los Angeles, California. Eric enjoys playing guitar, photography, painting, kayaking, camping and playing basketball, football and baseball. He is an avid musician, and enjoys jamming with his older brother, who is also musically inclined.
